Fake Lottery Tells Victims They Won, Just By Paying Utility Bill
Canadian scammers have come up with something new -- a phony lottery in which "winners" are chosen from among local utility company customers.
Arkansas Attorney General Mike Beebe says consumers in his state have reported getting letters from the scammers in the last two weeks.
The letter comes from a company called "Capital One Corp." based in Massachusetts. It claims that the recipient has won $50,000 through a random drawing based on account numbers of local utility customers.

Debt Collectors Often Collect Bogus Debts
Just because a debt collector sends you a notice that you owe money, it doesn't mean the claim is legitimate. Oftentimes these companies make honest mistakes. Sometimes they engage in out and out fraud.
In West Virginia, one consumer received a notice from Pinnacle Credit Services demanding payment for a debt it was assigned to collect. The consumer denied she owed the money and when the company persisted, she contacted the state attorney general's office.

The really small screen -- cell phone movies
BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- The cameras capture the young man walking down the stairs, reciting a monologue about the three things people should know about him: His favorite movie is "Gone with the Wind," he loves roller coasters and he hates when people don't take him seriously.
The shot is complicated and takes several attempts to perfect. But there's no big camera equipment, no expert sound system and no reels of film to capture the moment.
Instead, everyone involved, from the three cameramen and the sound guy to the extras, is producing the miniature movie with -- and for -- cell phones.

YouTube downloads for mobile devices by 2007?
Speaking at a digital media conference in New York yesterday, YouTube founder Chad Hurley said that he hopes to "have something on a mobile device" by the end of 2007. "It's a huge market and with our video lengths, it's a natural."
It's one of Hurley's first public outings after the Google acquisition of his YouTube service. YouTube already has a mobile service, but only for uploading videos, not watching them. Hurley wasn't sure he could figure out a way to make money from mobile downloads, since it's tricky to insert advertising on small screens without ruining the user experience.

FCC classifies Broadband over Power Line as information service
The Federal Communications Commission has decided to classify Broadband over Power Line (BPL) as an information service, putting it in the same class as DSL and cable. As a result, BPL will follow those two broadband services down the road to deregulation in hopes that it will encourage utilities to begin offering BPL service.

Microsoft beats Apple to the TV with Xbox Live Video
It has been some time in the making, but Microsoft has finally announced their online video entertainment strategy for the Xbox 360.
Beginning on November 22, Xbox 360 owners will be able to buy and rent over 1,000 hours of programming using the new Xbox Live Video Marketplace. The Marketplace will see Microsoft selling programming from CBS, MTV Networks, Paramount Pictures, Turner Broadcasting, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. "CSI," "South Park," "Batman Forever," and "Nacho Libre" are a few of the titles that will be offered by year's end. At launch, TV shows will be offered as download-to-own, while movies will only be available as 24-hour rentals.

YouTube and Verizon are reportedly in discussions that will lead to the popular web site's video content being made available on its cellular network and TV service. Cingular offers free music
Music on one's mobile phone is nothing surprising. Downloading it for free is a different matter; both Verizon and Sprint's service directs to a proprietary store and charges up to $2.50 per song.
