Debt Collectors Often Collect Bogus Debts
Just because a debt collector sends you a notice that you owe money, it doesn't mean the claim is legitimate. Oftentimes these companies make honest mistakes. Sometimes they engage in out and out fraud.
In West Virginia, one consumer received a notice from Pinnacle Credit Services demanding payment for a debt it was assigned to collect. The consumer denied she owed the money and when the company persisted, she contacted the state attorney general's office.

The really small screen -- cell phone movies
BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- The cameras capture the young man walking down the stairs, reciting a monologue about the three things people should know about him: His favorite movie is "Gone with the Wind," he loves roller coasters and he hates when people don't take him seriously.
The shot is complicated and takes several attempts to perfect. But there's no big camera equipment, no expert sound system and no reels of film to capture the moment.
Instead, everyone involved, from the three cameramen and the sound guy to the extras, is producing the miniature movie with -- and for -- cell phones.

YouTube downloads for mobile devices by 2007?

It's one of Hurley's first public outings after the Google acquisition of his YouTube service. YouTube already has a mobile service, but only for uploading videos, not watching them. Hurley wasn't sure he could figure out a way to make money from mobile downloads, since it's tricky to insert advertising on small screens without ruining the user experience.

Arnold's turnaround -- A year after embarrassing defeat, Schwarzenegger cruising to re-election
WASHINGTON - If there's one storyline that nearly all Americans can appreciate, it's the comeback.
We see it in our films ("The Natural," "Star Wars"), our sports (the 1992-93 Buffalo Bills, the 2004 Red Sox), our history (the Texan victory after the Alamo, the Pacific theater in World War II), and -- especially -- our politics.
Take Harry Truman's come-from-behind victory over Thomas E. Dewey in the 1948 presidential election. Or Richard Nixon's two presidential wins in 1968 and 1972, after losing his 1960 bid and his race for governor two years later. Or the political triumphs by the ultimate Comeback Kid -- Bill Clinton -- after Gennifer Flowers, his administration's health-care debacle, and his impeachment.

Four firefighters killed in California wildfire
A wind-whipped wildfire started by an arsonist killed four firefighters and stranded up to 400 people in an recreational-vehicle park in California.
"Everybody is hunkered down here. They're fighting the fire around us. It's across the street from us," said Charles Van Brunt, a ranger at the station at the entrance to Silent Valley Club, the recreational vehicle park near Palm Springs. The residents were in no immediate danger, he said last night.
Authorities asked people in the park to stay put to leave roads clear for firefighters. Hundreds of others in the area were forced from their homes.
Fire officials said the blaze was deliberately set around 1 a.m. Fire Chief John Hawkins said the arson "constitutes murder."

Wal-Mart to Push Computers, Consumer Electronics for Holidays
CHICAGO — Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) said on Monday it would promote key electronics such as flat-panel televisions, MP3 players, video gaming consoles and laptop computers as part of an aggressive holiday campaign.
Less than one week after the world's biggest retailer declared an early start to the holiday shopping season by cutting prices on more than 100 popular toys and games, Wal-Mart said it intends to be the lowest-priced retailer in gift categories such as electronics and jewelry as well.
Wal-Mart has expanded its offering of flat-panel televisions, bringing in name-brands such as Sony (SNE) and Samsung and stepping up advertising on prime programs including ESPN's Monday Night Football.
Gary Severson, Wal-Mart's head of electronics and toys, said the company's surveys showed that it offered the lowest price on flat-panel TVs 88 percent of the time.
"We're working on that other 12 percent rapidly, believe me," he said at Wal-Mart's analyst meeting on Monday, adding that year-over-year sales growth was in the triple digits for flat-panel TVs.

Apple's iPod Looks Great at 5 Years Old
Oct. 23, 2006 — The big news on iPod's fifth birthday is, well, the iPod.

With 70 percent of the market in Apple's hands and more than 65 million iPods in consumers' hands, there seems to be nothing even close to threatening the player's dominance — even with major players like Microsoft trying desperately to pump up the hype on its forthcoming player and download store, Zune.
