UN warns about rising food costs

Higher food prices may be here to stay as demand from developing countries and production costs rise, says the UN's Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

It warned that the current spike in global food prices was higher than previous records, partly because bad weather had ruined crops.

Although high prices will ease off, other factors, such as rising biofuel demand, will keep future costs high.

The FAO said speculators were also to blame for volatile commodity markets.

Teenager's Science Fair Project May Deliver Us From Plastic

I bought groceries at Trader Joe's the other day. As anyone who has ever shopped there knows, Trader Joe's is full of incredibly attractive, cheap food, which, if you manage to make it through all the plastic packaging it comes in, you can actually eat. Unfortunately, by the time I started cooking I had more or less lost my appetite, since every time I discarded one of those packages I felt like I dropped another circle in hell.

This week's release of the Fedora 9 Linux distribution makes putting a full-fledged desktop on a portable USB thumb drive a three-click affair. Even better, you don't need Linux installed to create it, you can leave the data on your thumb drive untouched, and any files you create or settings you tweak remain in place the next time you boot up. After the jump, let's create a fully-functional desktop-to-go using a simple Windows program and a 1GB or larger thumb drive.

Can You Catch Up on Lost Sleep?

Let's do some sleep math. You lost two hours of sleep every night last week because of a big project due on Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, you slept in, getting four extra hours. Come Monday morning, you were feeling so bright-eyed, you only had one cup of coffee, instead of your usual two. But don't be duped by your apparent vim and vigor: You're still carrying around a heavy load of sleepiness, or what experts call "sleep debt"—in this case something like six hours, almost a full nights' sleep.

Save The Internet . .

Ok . . so normally I'm not too political . . but when it comes to
Saving the Internet . . you bet Im gonna get involved . .
So . . No suprize her that Corporate America wants to control
the internet so they can profit from it. We need to stop corporations
like AT&T, Comcast, Sprint, Verizon, Qwest, Time Warner & Turner from
having control over the internet. For them, control means regulating
how much internet you get, at what cost, and profits galore. Do we
really want to see them get filthy rich like the oil companys - Exxon Mobil,
Chevron & Conoco Philips. Didnt they rip us off enough, do we want to let
the Cable and Phone industries do the same to us. Well, if we sit back and do
nothing guess what will happen. They got money and lobbyist who sit in Congress and persuade our representatives that its a good idea to give control to them. In conclusion, I offer a couple website I found that give more information and offer a means of contacting your local Congressman on your behalf. Lets Fight the Good Fight and not sit back and let them take control.

Linux Shootout: 7 Desktop Distros Compared

In the last couple of years, desktop-friendly Linux distributions have taken enormous leaps -- they're easier to install, better maintained, and more powerful than ever before. There's also that many more of them -- which means that many more possibilities to sift through.

In this roundup I've looked at seven Linux distributions, all mainly aimed at desktop users. Some ought to be household names; some are less widely sung but still worth looking at. All are meant to be top-of-the-line, "throw-and-go" distros for general use, so I paid careful attention to how they behaved on a fairly broad range of hardware -- how display, networking, or other default configurations were set to behave both out of the box and after an update (if one was available).

1 - openSUSE
2 - Ubuntu 8.4
3 - PCLinuxOS
4 - Mandriva Linux One
5 - Fedora
6 - SimplyMEPIS
7 - CentOS 5.1.

AMD: 45nm, DDR3 and Socket AM3 in 2008

This summer, AMD will announce its first major architectural change since the introduction of the K8 architecture in 2003. This new architecture, dubbed K10, will first make an appearance in the server space, with the introduction of the Barcelona-family processors.

K10 features a native quad-core design that incorporates shared-L3 cache, HyperTransport-3 support and backwards functionality with AM2 motherboards. However, the original K10 desktop and server processors will debut on the 65nm architecture -- a process AMD only started mastering in December 2006 with the launch of the Brisbane desktop CPU family.
